Colocation compute contributed $215.4 million. CFO Jim Nygaard closed the matter on the November 6 earnings call: the wind-down completes in the fourth quarter and the company enters 2027 as a high-density colocation pure-play. Self-mining fell from $57.4 million to $12.3 million year over year; third-party hosting, from $8.7 million to $5.2 million. At the end of September it had almost 50% fewer machines running than at the close of 2025. The full figures are in the report covered by Cointelegraph.

The same day, IREN confirmed a 58% drop in mining revenue and a complete exit before year-end. Two of North America’s largest listed hashrate operators are switching off the ASIC in the same quarter. The coverage has treated it as an earnings story. It is something else: the reallocation of a scarce asset — interconnected, permitted electrical capacity — away from securing a monetary network and towards inference capacity.

What’s being sold isn’t a business, it’s a slot in the interconnection queue

A listed miner is not, materially, a cryptography company. It is a power supply contract signed years ago, a substation, a grid connection point and a municipal permit. The ASIC is the easiest tenant to evict in existence: it disconnects in minutes, demands no liquid cooling or N+1 redundancy, and its sunk cost is low relative to the value of the site. That is why converting a miner into a colocation provider is not a product pivot but the exercise of an option that was implicit in the balance sheet from day one.

The trigger is not strategic enlightenment, it’s the numbers. Core Scientific booked $266.5 million in impairments on mining assets in the first quarter of 2026, citing a weaker Bitcoin price, hashprice at all-time lows and falling secondary-market equipment values. In the second quarter it terminated its equipment agreement with Block and Proto and swallowed $41.9 million in losses on the transition. When you pay to get out of a machine contract, you are declaring that the megawatt is worth more empty than occupied by that tenant.

Here is the mechanism that matters. Mining pays per kilowatt-hour whatever hashprice allows it to pay: it is an auction in which the bidder has a mathematical ceiling set by the coin price, difficulty and fees. AI inference has no such ceiling — it pays against multi-year colocation contracts with investment-grade counterparties and software gross margins. In any auction where both bid for the same megawatt with the same interconnection, mining loses. Not sometimes: structurally, for as long as AI capex continues to be financed the way it is.

The security budget becomes a residue

The uncomfortable consequence is for Bitcoin. For fifteen years, the network’s security budget — how much real money is burned to make an attack expensive — has been understood as a function of the coin price: price rises, hashrate rises, the cost of attacking rises. That relationship still exists, but it has stopped being the only relevant variable. Hashrate now gets installed wherever the megawatt has no better buyer. The security budget is starting to behave like a residue: whatever is left of global electrical capacity after AI has bid first.

That has an immediate geographic translation. The hashrate leaving Texas, Georgia or New York does not disappear; it migrates to jurisdictions where energy is cheap because there is no alternative demand, because it is subsidised, or because environmental and tax oversight is lax. In other words, towards places with fewer institutional checks and, frequently, with a single political interlocutor. A network that prides itself on geopolitical neutrality becomes more dependent on the tolerance of specific governments precisely as listed operators — audited, with boards and disclosure obligations — stop being the ones driving consensus.

This is not an apocalypse. It is a change in risk profile: less hashrate in the hands of companies subject to US law, more in the hands of opaque operators with extremely low marginal costs. For a network whose value proposition is censorship resistance, the question of who signs the electricity bill was never secondary.

Social licence is the new bottleneck

The second axis was activated the same Wednesday. Dina Powell McCormick, president of Meta, warned at the WSJ conference that Democratic wins in the midterms will make data centre construction harder, and admitted the sector “hasn’t explained as well as it should have” the benefits of those investments. Meta has centres in 23 states and five planned projects of a gigawatt or more. Its recipe for closing local deals is explicit: pay for its own electricity, direct the tax surplus to teachers and emergency services, hire local labour and secure bipartisan support.

Translated: the scarce resource is no longer GPUs or transformers, it’s permission. Opposition organises around the neighbour’s electricity bill, which is the easiest political argument to win there is. And here the irony is double for converted miners: the ASIC was a politically invisible, flexible tenant — curtailable in seconds, useful to the grid operator — whereas an inference campus on a firm contract is exactly the rigid load that state regulators are starting to examine closely. You swap one unpopular activity for another unpopular one, except this second one can’t be switched off when spot prices spike.

That is why the value of Core Scientific’s and IREN’s assets lies not in installed capacity but in permits already granted. Every additional month of local scrutiny makes building from scratch more expensive and revalues the mining brownfield. It is a regulatory arbitrage with an expiry date: it lasts as long as the interconnection contracts signed under the old regime.

Goodbye to the decorrelation story

On November 5, Bitcoin fell to $76,000, dragged down by the collapse of the AI trade. This is not sentiment contagion. It is that both assets share balance sheets, creditors and substations. The same convertible debt vehicles that financed GPU capex financed ASIC purchases; the same funds that weight CoreWeave weight its landlords; the same sites serve both. When the credit risk of AI capex gets repriced, so does the capital structure of half the listed mining sector. Decorrelation from tech equities was an artefact of a period in which Bitcoin wasn’t competing for the same inputs. That period is over.

Where this reading could be wrong

There is a solid counterargument and it deserves stating. Mining is self-correcting: if enough operators switch off, difficulty falls, the survivors’ hashprice rises and equilibrium is restored at a lower hashrate level that is just as secure in terms of relative attack cost. What the Core Scientific and IREN exits prove with certainty is that those two specific balance sheets are worth more as colocation; they do not prove that global mining is unviable. If aggregate hashrate keeps hitting records over the coming quarters despite these exits, the “residual budget” thesis is refuted in practice: it will mean capacity has been redistributed, not destroyed.

The second risk is that the one who is wrong is the buyer, not the seller. The November 5 drop is a reminder that AI capex is financed with debt against inference demand that is still unproven at that scale — Meta acknowledges that its consumer agent Muse has 10 million users and needs to reach billions to justify the spend. If colocation demand cools, those megawatts go looking for a tenant again, and the only tenant that accepts one-day contracts and interruptible loads is still the ASIC. The asymmetry is key: converting a mine into a data centre costs hundreds of millions and two years; plugging miners back in takes weeks. The option to go back exists and it is cheap.

Third caveat: part of this decision is idiosyncratic. Core Scientific has been chained to CoreWeave since 2024 and is carrying a restructuring; IREN has its own contract structure. Generalising from two issuers to a thesis about Bitcoin’s security economics requires seeing what operators without an AI contractual anchor do.

What to do with this

If you invest in infrastructure, stop valuing these companies on installed capacity or efficiency in joules per terahash and start valuing them on the legal quality of their social licence: permit vintage, headroom in the agreement with the grid operator, exposure to local retail tariffs and — this is new — whether the contract includes the kind of community compensation Meta describes as a condition for closing projects. A site with documented bipartisan support is worth a premium over an identical one without it, and that premium is not yet in the multiples.

If you build product on Bitcoin, the assumption that the security budget grows with the price has stopped being automatic, and we are two halvings away from the subsidy being anecdotal. The operational question is how many confirmations your design requires if the marginal cost of producing hashrate keeps falling because it is produced in jurisdictions with giveaway energy. And if you are designing a decentralised compute business, the lesson is less romantic than it looks: the bottleneck is not coordinating idle GPUs, it’s the connection permit. Whoever has one signed before the political cycle hardens decides who computes in 2028.

Core Scientific will shut down its Bitcoin mining during the fourth quarter and IREN will do the same before year-end: what is being reallocated isn’t machines, it’s grid interconnection contracts.
